From the Inside Flap
In "Rise to Rebellion, bestselling author Jeff Shaara captured the origins of the American Revolution as brilliantly as he depicted the Civil War in "Gods and Generals and "The Last Full Measure. Now he continues the amazing saga of how thirteen colonies became a nation, taking the conflict from kingdom and courtroom to the bold and bloody battlefields of war. It was never a war in which the outcome was obvious. Despite their spirit and stamina, the colonists were outmanned and outfought by the brazen British army. General George Washington found his troops trounced in the battles of Brooklyn and Manhattan and retreated toward Pennsylvania. With the future of the colonies at its lowest ebb, Washington made his most fateful decision: to cross the Delaware River and attack the enemy. The stunning victory at Trenton began a saga of victory and defeat that concluded with the British surrender at Yorktown, a moment that changed the history of the world. The despair and triumph of America's first great army is conveyed in scenes as powerful as any Shaara has written, a story told from the points of view of some of the most memorable characters in American history. There is George Washington, the charismatic leader who held his army together to achieve an unlikely victory; Charles Cornwallis, the no-nonsense British general, more than a match for his colonial counterpart; Nathaniel Greene, who rose from obscurity to become the finest battlefield commander in Washington's army; The Marquis de Lafayette, the young Frenchman who brought a soldier's passion to America; and Benjamin Franklin, a brilliant man of science and philosophy who became the finest statesman of his day. FromNathan Hale to Benedict Arnold, William Howe to "Light Horse" Harry Lee, from Trenton and Valley Forge, Brandywine and Yorktown, the American Revolution's most immortal characters and poignant moments are brought to life in remarkable Shaara style. Yet, "The Glorious Cause is more than just a story of the legendary six-year struggle. It is a tribute to an amazing people who turned ideas into action and fought to declare themselves free. Above all, it is a riveting novel that both expands and surpasses its beloved author's best work. "From the Hardcover edition.

Rise to Rebellion and The Glorious Cause: A Novel of the American Revolution are Jeff Shaara's two-volume history of the American Revolution. The characters are fictionalized. This allows Shaara to bring them to life. We get see the thoughts and dialog of the founding fathers: John and Samuel Adams, Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. My conclusion is that Sam Adams played the key role in the start of the revolution, organizing the Sons of Liberty and the Boston Tea Party. George Washington was able to keep an under-equipped army alive despite the overwhelming superiority of the British forces. Of course, the stupidity of the British generals was a big help. I recommend both volumes.
This book, preceded by it's companion, Rise to Rebellion, should be required reading for every American in this crucial election year. These books will give you a founding in American History that either has eluded many of us or has drifted into the haze of the schoolroom in the intervening years.Do NOT miss the "To the Reader", "Introduction" or "Afterword" in either of these books. They are exciting, informative reading in their own right and not to be shortchanged. The best part? This is seriously fun reading! Because the books are, technically, fiction, the author had the leeway to make them less dry than straight history can be. But they ARE accurate; this is what "Historical Fiction" is meant to be.
Jeff Shaara is a U.S. history teacher's best friend. In "The Glorious Cause" (& it's predecessor "Rise To Rebellion") he informs and educates readers by communicating the human insight and intelligence that created the United States. He makes the reader stop and realize that THESE were men (& women) who struggled to conceive a nation built literally from the "ground up" all based on "an idea". Even while discarding tired traditions and identities that seemed so correct and justified. Thank you sir for writing what every American citizen should know.
This is a very good historical novel, which will give you a good idea of the movements of armies, strategy and tactics, and major military personalities of the Revolutionary War from 1776 to 1783, with maps of many of the battles aiding us to better understand some of the campaigns. The major figures--Washington, Greene, Morgan, Franklin (mainly in France), Lafayette, Von Steuben, and Cornwallis--are portrayed in depth as imperfect human beings, who did their best under trying circumstances. Even though the author invents dialogue and thoughts, these seem plausible and research-based.Shaara helps us comprehend why certain battles were won and lost, with raw recruits sometimes running without firing a shot, but at other times, doing well under pressure, due to astute leadership and tactics. He also details how Cornwallis got trapped at Yorktown. Shaara rightly puts the blame mainly on General Henry Clinton, who feared that the French and Americans would launch an attack on New York City, so he was reluctant to help Cornwallis in Virginia. Unfortunately, other major battles (such as Saratoga) are not fully delineated. And Thomas Jefferson is mentioned only once or twice, but his role as governor of Virginia could have been given more space, since he mobilized the state's militia to fight with the Continental Army in the Southern campaign.Shaara does paint a moving and informative picture of the soldiers of the Continental Army, and their struggles to survive without proper clothing, footwear, and food. We also learn how George Washington inspired the men and kept much of the army together, although it had fewer soldiers, resources, and less training than the British and Hessian forces.Overall, the book brings the War for American Independence to life, and is informative and generally interesting, although a bit lengthy in some parts and sketchy in others. It continues where Shaara's earlier book--Rise to Rebellion--leaves us. Read together, the two books give us a good portrait of the events and characters of the first independence movement against a colonial power.

The Glorious Cause is the second book in Jeff Shaara's narration of the American Revolution. Having read and loved the first, I already knew what I was in for when I picked up this novel. Wow! Shaara is such a master at presenting history in a way that is thrilling and even, at times, nailbiting. It doesn't matter that we already know how the story turns out, this book is fantastic!Again, Shaara changes perspective with each chapter, featuring such important players as George Washington, Charles Cornwallis, Benjamin Franklin, Nathaniel Greene and the Marquis de Lafayette. Complete with maps, Shaara presents this stage of the war in a very readable progression of military victories and defeats, as well diplomatic battles. From cheering on Daniel Morgan to feeling giddy about the announcement of the French warships arrival in Chesapeake Bay, this book was a rip-roaring ride through the battles that determined the fate of all Americans. Truly, everyone should read this!
