This book is full of real insights on what good manners are and why they are useful to any individual, but presented in a way very relatable to adolescent readers -- the language is clear and direct to them -- for example, why it's not a good idea to pick your nose, but if you do, use a tissue, in private, and do not investigate it after you pick, then wash hands. I bought it to help me teach my eleven-year-old how we in her family want her to treat us. She seemed to understand how to behave at school and other peoples' houses, but not so much at home. We have used this book not only to explain what we want, but to have a two-way dialogue between us and her on what she also wants from us. Very helpful book.
The only things really missing are drawings of how a table should be set, how to hold utensils & all other ideas that can be pictured. This is vital so young people can actually SEE what is being advised. Basically, too many kids are very poor table manners & this kind of help is really needed.
My 7 year-old son repeatedly took time to read this on his own in his room--and seemed to enjoy it. Far more effective than a lecture from Mom! Five stars.
Good book for kids about 10 and up. My kidos are on the younger side so some parts of this book were a little over their head. However the book is well written and kept the kidos engaged.
Great book! The author did a great job teaching manners in a way that is engaging and comical yet still helpful. When it first came in the mail, my daughter saw it and wasn't interested in reading it. Then the other day I found her reading it. Now she says she likes it. I wish more kids would read it. Adults too!
I was hoping for a better ratio of pictures and storytelling compared to a kind of kid's guide book. I can't see older students who would be capable of reading this book (ages 8 or 9 and up), pick it up and read it on their own and learn the messages, but it's also challenging to read aloud to students because there isn't really a story line and not enough pictures to support the text for non-readers. However, it will still find its use and home in my office at school.
Finally—something my son considers an authoritative guide on what he should quit doing. He won’t listen to his parents, but because it’s in print it must be true.
My 8 year old son is an avid reader. I tried talking to him about some rude behaviors and basic manners, but it was like talking to a wall. I bought this book, he read it and it has communicated to him what I could not! He really appreciated the humor! I plan to use it with my other children to help teach manners.
