Well, I almost stopped reading this book when I realized it was a marriage of convenience book. Normally, those types of boos are full of content I wouldn't want to read. However, I ended up reading a little further and this book was better then I thought. To be blunt, it didn't revolve around the sexual activity of the main characters. While there were mentions of lovemaking, it was just mentioned there wasn't any detail. The writing was solid, the setting pretty, and the characters interested. This is one of those books that I don't regret reading, but it still lacked a couple of things. The spiritual content was solid until the end. I felt the author confused salvation and baptism as the same thing. The other thing that knocked off a star was Elisha worrying about Susanna leaving him toward the end. I felt like I was missing something to understand his fear.
This is a lovely story about a young cowhand taking over the responsibility of taking in a very ill elderly man and his young granddaughter. The old man is a Preacher who is aware that he is dying but insists that he wants the cowhand to marry his young granddaughter so that they will be legally man and wife before his death. He explains to them that they will be attracted to each other living in the little cabin by themselves so far up in the mountains after his death. So they agree to have him marry them and promise to stay together and be faithful so that their marriage will be blessed by God. Then the book continues to tell their story after the death of her Preacher grandfather. I think many people would enjoy this exciting story of all the things they must endure through their marriage and how they learn to make the right decisions. Read and enjoy!
1st - if you want to read all about the book in reviews - then go elsewhere. My opinion is -if I read the reviews that tell all about the book, then why would I need to read the book. ---- Just saying ----This is a very good book about life for a young man & eventually a young woman who are brought together when he finds her and her grandfather in need of his help. For some, this story will be slow going - but is basically an almost day to day experience(s) of this young man & his new family. And is well worth reading, even though there are some words such as fell which should be feel and some words left out in some sentences. - But nothing that took away from the actual story. And if that keeps some people from reading this story then I feel sorry for them because they did not get "into" the story as I like to do when I read.
What a great book in the first of this series. Having not read this author before, I was cautious but thankfully it was even better than I could have expected. Loved the characters right down to the ranch hands who were a kind, friendly group. There was such respect and camaraderie between them all. The way the love between Susana and Elisha started and grew to such a successful marriage was a captivating story to be part of. This is one book that you should not miss. Plus, there are more.
I am not sure why I liked it so much but I did. I don't usually read Westerns but the description on this one intrigued me -- I seem to like marriage of convenience books. This did not have a lot of the usual western-type action but the writing drew me in so much that I was very interested in the story and what was going to happen next in Elisha's life. The character development was done well and made you like and be interested in the characters. Elisha is a young down-and-out cowhand who was injured in a horse accident. He rides to a ranch and is taken on as a cowhand even tho he is not physically up to par. The owner of the ranch is a Christian and helps him by giving him a job at a solitary cabin where he can work at his own pace. His lonely life changes dramatically during this time at the cabin. Now things become real interesting. It is a nice Christian love story. The Religious parts are short bursts here and there but integral to the story. Since religion is part of my life, it was natural to read about the Bible and God and prayer but it seems to bother people who don't include God in their lives.
Just exactly my kind of story. Plot development kept me turning pages. Characters became friends I didn't want to let go of. Victory over tremendous challenges set in simpler, tougher environment of the times of American west made me pull for this unusual couple. I could identify with Elisha's physical debility especially but trusted he was made from sturdy cloth and that his faith in God would develop over time and with experience. This book is free from filthy language, Christian without apology albeit not overly prudish. Just perfect and I didn't want it to end.
Cabin On Pinto Creek was a very honest read about life during the Old West time period.Elisha and Susanna are thrown together when Elisha rescues Susanna and her ailing grandfather from the bitter cold a few miles from his line cabin. Elisha is not sure what to make of Susanna and her grandfather because he has gotten used to living in the cabin that is part of the J Bar C ranch. He is up there to make sure that the ranch's cattle do not roam into unsafe areas. When Elisha stumbles across the stranded Susanna and her grandfather, Elisha immediately realizes that the two are in very bad shape. He takes them back to the cabin and nurses them back to health. Susanna is afraid of losing her grandfather who is very weak after being stranded out in the elements. The old man knew that he would leave his grand daughter alone with a stranger, so he talked Elisha into marry and keeping Susanna safe once he passed. Elisha felt that it was his duty to agree to keep Susanna safe. Will the tow of them grow to love each other? Will they stay strangers?Give this book a try. It was a very satisfying read.
