From Publishers Weekly
Devotees of Bantock's enigmatic bestseller, Griffin & Sabine , won't be disappointed by this equally intriguing and perplexing--and equally gorgeous--sequel. London artist Griffin Moss and islander Sabine Strohem, who have never met face-to-face or spoken via phone, exchange hand-illustrated, handwritten letters and postcards--ostensibly reproduced here, tucked into envelopes and removable for reading. As this installment opens, Griffin, frightened by his psychic connection to his otherworldly correspondent, flees England on a night sea journey from Italy to Japan and Australia. He leaves a letter for Sabine, urging her to stay in his abandoned studio. Winter turns to summer and Griffin's courage overcomes his trepidation; still, Sabine warns him to "be . . . cautious; the eye of the storm is a deceptive place." Griffin's initial distress and progressively optimistic outlook shine through his paintings. Sabine's cryptic visual messages seem tinged with mysticism and, possibly, malevolence. Perhaps because it has been established in the previous book, the couple's supernatural bond is less of a focus here, and at times, his art and hers are a touch too similar. Nevertheless, Bantock's distinctive premise continues to puzzle and delight, the wonderful stationery has an authentic look and, not surprisingly, the finale leaves room for another chapter. If you don't have the original book, I would give the book itself 4 or 5 stars. If you do have the book, don't waste your money on this edition, hence being generous with two stars (really deserves one). The blurb for this version says "Destined to become a collector's volume, this limited, 25th anniversary edition contains new artwork, an original postcard, and specially created decorative stamps, making this a book that is as rewarding to enjoy all over again—or to discover for the very first time." Pffft. I have compared my book, a sixth printing, with this Anniversary edition. There are four differences:1. On the cover of this one, it says 25th Anniversary Edition.2. The dust jacket blurb on the inside cover is slightly revised.3. On the very last page there is one more envelope. Inside is a postcard with Bantock's artwork on it--the card is smaller than a standard postcard; it is about the size of 1/4 of a piece of US copy paper. Also inside is a similarly sized sheet of six stickers with images from the Griffin and Sabine books.4. The quality of the reproduction of the artwork in the Anniversary edition, at least in the copy I received, isn't as sharp / crisp nor is the color as vibrant. If you didn't have the two books side by side you might not notice, but the printing/detail in my old version is definitely better. That's it. So for the first time in well over 15 years of ordering from Amazon, I am returning something. Bummers. If you do not have a copy of Griffin and Sabine already (why not?!!!), you might well enjoy this one. Given the difference in reproduction of the art, if you are an artist or particular about details (guilty on both counts), you might look for an older printing. But it's a great book and great series. Just irked at the publisher's misleading blurb.
This book is the 2nd book in the Griffin & Sabine series. It starts with his inviting her use his apartment (if she exists) and ends with his return to his apartment to find it empty but with a note asking him why he never returned. Of course the story is told through the brilliant art of Nick Bantock's collection of letters and postcards. Settle in.
The format is novel in that epistolary narratives are already uncommon and this has complex design elements complementing the structure, like envelopes with letters and fronts and backs of postcards. But the art is often a bit disturbing and the story is, in the end, unconvincing. It doesn’t go very far. The characters’ selves and relationship are underdeveloped and their behaviors aren’t believable, no matter how you read the ending.I read this in a senior level college course where we are examining the craft of letter writing and epistolary narratives. But it requires no scrutiny at all to be dissatisfied with the story.
In the second of the Griffin and Sabine stories, we find Sabine having travelled from her island in the South Pacific to London in order to finally meet Griffin whom she had been waiting to meet for many years. Griffin unfortunately had already picked up and left London to travel the world assuming that he would never see Sabine and never be able to realize fully the love he had for her. The book is then filled with the correspondence between Sabine who is writing from Griffin's home and Griffin who receives the letters at various points along his journey. A great ending that lends added sadness to the storyline that you will not want to miss!
I liked this book but feel short-changed due to is length at only 48 pages. However, the artistry and the gimmicky postcards and letters inside envelopes makes up for it. A very intriguing story of the two main characters. The first book left me wanting to know more of the story so I did buy the next 2 books of the trilogy.
Carpe Diem.
This is such an adorable little book. I definitely will get the whole set. I’ve never read anything like it. I honestly wish they were longer.
wonderful interactive book that makes you feel as if you stumbled across someone's notebooks. Its a good story of mystery and suspense. One of my kids binge read it over a day and a half. Now begging me to get the rest of the series. There are some strong words in here but nothing tweens can't handle. Anyone younger is not appropriate for this book.
