Michael Card, if I may say so, is as good, if not better, an author/teacher as he is song writer. This book unwraps the amazing truth behind the single Hebrew word, hesed. Card said it took him 10 years to finish this book and it shows in his simple yet profound words to learn more about our God. It has challenged me with my picture of who God is and the amazing love that He has for us all.I’m 31 and have been listening to Michael Card’s albums for as long as I remember. I recall during a concert he was introducing a song and began teaching on the background of the lyrics. I was captivated by the “Imagination†God has gifted him with to share what he has learned. He then stopped himself and said, “you came to hear me sing, not preach.†Inside all I could think was “keep teaching!!â€I’m so glad to have his books to hear from the wisdom that God has blessed Card with.
Michael Card has again combined the "grace & truth" of Hesed. He has searched the Word ….and this writing 'sings' with a glorious sound !! I especially like the way he integrates the Old Testament & the New Testament and reveals profound thoughts . This book will inform and inspire the reader.

"Inexpressible" by Michael Card is a good read on the concept of hesed (expression of God's character and lovingkindness towards us that cannot be described in a single English word or concept). Around 140 pages, the author describes hesed in his own personal life and examples from the Bible. Among the several points covered include:1. Receiving something or everything from someone you don't expect to act in such a way.2. While experiencing the consequences of our own sin or the sin of others, we can still experience hesed.3. Importance of hesed in loving those who don't love us.4. When the author (white) experienced hesed in a predominately black church.5. Mutuality in receivng hesed from and giving hesed to.6. Jesus as the ultimate example of hesed.7. Instead of unhealthy fear of God, He wants to draw us to Him through His kindness.Well-written and full of good illustrations from both the author's life and the Bible, the book is helpful for either personal or group study. I was given a review copy by IVP Books in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
Michael Card is right to identify the Hebrew term hesed as one of the most fascinating and profound words in the entire Bible. Hesed is commonly translated love, but also connotes loving-kindness, loyal love, enduring love, covenant love, covenant loyalty, and a plethora of other meanings that are, yes, expressed in the word love. But hesed has a lexical range that is far more reaching and far more significant that the English "love" only can convey, which is why it is so variously translated. Hesed reflects what we long for, and the writers of Scripture chose that very word as a descriptor of God and God's character, not only in the Old Testament, but also in surprising ways in the New Testament.Card is most well known as a songwriter and singer, but he is also a teacher and student of the Bible. Read this book to learn more about God character and person and how hesed expresses a truth that is utterly unique, unsurpassed in greatness, and ineffable in beauty, that being that the God who is hesed extends hesed, an expression of himself, to you, to me, and to us.
